History

The library was established at the same time as the Fulda Seminary College in 1572, but until the early 20th century, it was of modest size. In 1886 a fixed budget was established for the first time, and during the last 20 years the library’s holdings have increased by a third. In 1994 the seminary college library was combined with Fulda Faculty of Theology’s “Fachseminar-Bibliotheken”. These two institutions were brought together in the same building and are now governed by the same lending system. Since the changes, this new library has functioned as the “Hauptbibliothek” (main library) of the faculty.

At the same time, the library moved into new premises: a newly built reading room between two older buildings (the “Domdechanei”, built between 1702 and 1704, and the seminary college, which was the former monastery building, built between 1667 and 1670). The new reading room is the visual centre of the library.

Since 1994 newly acquired holdings have been computer catalogued. The retrospective cataloguing of old holdings has almost finished.
