Language Requirements

New students who can demonstrate that they have reached the necessary level in Latin and Greek must take Hebrew in the form of three hours per week (these can include lectures, seminars or language classes) in the winter semester and three hours per week in the summer semester. They will sit the exam at the end of the summer semester.

1. New students who have no previous knowledge of any languages necessary for a theology degree (Latin, Greek or Hebrew) must attend six semester periods a week (these can include lectures, seminars or language classes ) of Greek and six semester periods per week of Latin in the winter semester. In the following summer semester, they must attend four semester periods per week each of Latin and Greek. They must then sit examinations at the end of the summer semester in Latin and Greek.

Three semester periods per week of Hebrew (foundation course – part 1) are also compulsory in the following winter semester. An examination in Hebrew will be taken at the end of the winter semester

2. New students who can show that they have already completed a course in Latin must attend six semester periods per week of Greek and three semester periods a week of Hebrew during the winter semester. There may be an exam in Hebrew at the end of the winter semester.

Four semester periods per week of Ancient Greek and three semester periods per week of Hebrew (optional) are scheduled for the following summer term. Students can take the “Graecum” and “Hebraicum” exams in Ancient Greek and Hebrew at the end of the summer semester.

3. During the so-called “language semester” (first semester of programme of study B), Latin and Greek lessons take place continuously from the 1st October until the middle of March.
